Food Deserts and Food Insecurity
Grown By Me was created to combat two of the most dangerous and burgeoning pandemics now facing society in general and low-income communities of color in particular; food deserts and food insecurity. By definition, food deserts are communities in which residents cannot easily access stores that sell affordable, healthy foods. Although the contributing factors of food deserts may appear too numerous to name, some causes are more traceable than others. These include the aftermath of urban flight, elimination of neighborhood grocery stores, proliferation of processed foods and economic inequality.
We believe that if given a choice most people would choose to eat healthy. However, due to aforementioned factors, in most instances, people simply can’t afford to eat healthy. Compounded by higher unemployment rates and stifling wages, economics plays a paramount role in this equation. The dollar menu has all but replaced nutritious meals. Simply stated, people are eating what they can afford.
Through our low cost, high yield sustainable food systems, Grown By Me remains determined to make both healthy food production and consumption affordable and accessible regardless of demographics.
